Most people in this blog probably know what Worls of Warcraft is, so I won't go into much detail about it. But if I had to descibe it in a few words I would say this: "an online game, in which you have a second life".
I have heard some crazy stories about people, who got really addicted to it. Of course, I don't know whether they are 100% true or not, but after finding thousands of addition pages and stories about it, these stories might be true.
I heard about a regular, every-day family; both parents employed and a kid in school. This fortune, however, did not last long once WoW was introduced to them by their kid. The whole family basically got addicted to it and it was so bad that they stopped going to work. Their lifes consisted of eating, sleeping and playing WoW. Of course the parents lost their jobs and the kid got excluded from school...
As I said, I don't know how much truth is in this story, but after finding a site for people, who are addicted to WoW I can imagin it's true!

As someone who has playeda fair share of this game throughout high school, I can give you examples of actual people that are addicted to this game. Many times I talk to people in game that really find WoW to be their only happiness. I also know a couple in real life who have had the same problem.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest problem I have found in this game, is that its an item based game. Meaning that the only way to significantly improve your ability to do better in the game is to aquire items. While there are items that are classed as "good", it has become inevitable that to really be any good at the game is if you have the best gear. To do that though, you probably have to play that game 30+ hours a week. In some cases you have to take time out of your day just to play wow, just like a job.
Now I don't know about you, but 30+ hours a week on anything (other than work I guess) is just plain bad.
I've played this game and I must say that the people who played it with me were addicted. It seems as though games like these really create an alternate reality for players and therefore become a way of life that can be controlled by a player and is therefor attractive and thus addictive.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be kinda interesting to take a look at an additcted person's profile. Like what they did before they started playing, how many friends they have, how they perform at school and stuff like that. This is just a guess in the dark, but I would assume that the profiles of people, who are really addicted to WoW very much look like the same.
