Voting Too Subjective? Fans Ruining Television

This article from The Dead Bolt discusses whether or not the process of having fans vote for television show winners such as American Idol and The Biggest Loser is ruining these shows. The article discusses reasoning behind this statement being that the majority of shows' winners are simply winning a popularity contest with fans and that the person who should win often does not.

Is it always fair with fan voting? No. But how do you give fans their say, still leave other viewers satisfied, and give victory to the right person? Is the term "winner" too subjective? Perhaps fan voting should play a part throughout the season but not in a finale.

What do you think?

  1. I read some of the comments from the article, and I agree with those who say that the vote should be limited to one vote per person. I am sure people would still find a way around it, but I think it would be a little more fair. I think another thing that could help is if the fans decide the bottom three, and then the judges decide who leaves. This way the producers would have most of the control, but fans would still be involved.

  2. I have to agree with Angela on this one. The voting should decide the bottom contestants, but the final vote should always be cast by the judges. The show INXS a few years back used that technique, and it worked brilliantly. Giving the audience total control over who stays and who goes is never a good idea.
