Israel and Its Internet

47% of Israel's population are considered "internet users." Personally this surprised me, considering that it is a world leader in terms of broadband internet penetration. Israel has little to no internet filtering or censorship, in fact, Israel has yet to legally authorize or implement filtering of the Internet. According to the ONI, there are no signs of filtering in the following areas: political, social, conflict/security, or internet tools.

Israel ranks highest in the world for most time spent online per user- average time spent is 57.5 hours a month. Blogging doesn't have a major web presence in israel, however many Israelis turn to the web as a news source. The web also has played a major role in communication and has even been called a "battleground" for vital Israeli interests and their national image.

According the the ONI, Israel seems to be a leader on the web- however, I came across this article that believes otherwise. Check it out here.

  1. I have a friend studying abroad in Israel and he has had a really easy time with the access to the internet over there. He has only had good things to say about the internet there.
I find it interesting how much the internet usage is promoted. I saw this on this site http://www.isoc.org.il/index_eng.html
This site also gives the ability to get domain names.

  2. I find it not surprising how many hours are spent on the internet by the Israel population solely because of all the political turmoil going on constantly throughout the country.
