Digital Natives and Helpless Victims: Alex Rabaa's presentation

Warning: Some links in this post may be NSFW.

Growing up online. Lots of kids do it, and the thing to remember is that everyone on the internet is anonymous. To some this is scary, to others this is comforting. How does it make you feel?

There's this girl who's known on the internet as Jessi Slaughter. Ok, she doesn't look too threatening. Until you check out this video she made as a reply to some comments made on other videos of hers. She seems pretty confident, maybe even cocky. And then this mysterious online group decides to take a crack at her and... well, here's the end result. And now this girl is famous all over the internet, her father too. Anytime her face comes up, or her name, or even her alias, this is all anyone will think of.

And how about that mysterious group, Anonymous? What they did to Jessi will impact her childhood deeply, while they remain safe because the internet is in fact anonymous. They get to continue trolling, from all around the globe, in any home, coffee shop, classroom, or office. Talk about collective intelligence.
